When buying a used acoustic guitar all you need is a little knowledge on what to look for and you're all set for hours of enjoyment. Like most purchases it will come down to how much you want to spend and the quality you will get. The good news is these days even inexpensive guitars can be quite nice.

But there are a few things to look for depending on your needs. If you're just beginning and have no accessories, it's always a good idea to get a tuner. There are several electronic tuners on the market that will do the job. You want to make sure you're in tune when practicing. It helps you get better quicker and when you're having those practice days where the songs just don't sound right sometimes it's just because the guitar is out of tune.
Now you can tune it by ear but you have enough on your plate to learn the guitar, so using a tuner in the beginning will really help.
Does your used acoustic have a case? You can get a hard case, a soft "gig" bag. (these come in different thickness) A case known as chipboard or sometimes even no case at all if it's just going to stay in your home.
It's a good idea to try and keep the temperature rather constant if you can but if it varies drastically it's not the end of the world. You just might need an occasional neck adjustment. This is easily performed by an experienced player or at y our local music store.

If you've had your guitar for awhile and it's seem to have lost that crispness or bell like sound (hard to explain sounds in words) or even if the guitar sounds dull. Sometimes you just need a new set of strings. And you will be surprised at the different sounds y ou can get by the different strings. It’s good to get a set and see how they feel and sound and use them for awhile.
People will ask how long the strings should stay on? Depends how often you play. If you play for an hour a day, I would bet after 4 or 5 weeks, a new set of strings would sound quite nice.
Depending on your entry level to guitar playing, even the inexpensive ones these days are suitable to learn on. And like anything else the more you can spend, usually the better quality you're gong to get.
I've had students just getting a guitar to play for awhile to see if they are going to stay with it. It might be they play for a month or two and switch instruments or go on to something else. In the old days you could shell out some serious money only to watch the guitar sit in the closet and you're out the money unless you sell it or were renting it.
With the inexpensive and intermediate guitars of today this isn't that big of an investment.
Now if you go into higher priced guitars the benefits really start to add up. Higher priced used acoustic guitars usually have far superior wood for a better sound. Better hardware (tuning keys) and even pickups for sound. They usually have superior craftsmanship and will be easier to play.
This is important for beginners. How easy is the guitar to play. I started on one that wasn't easy and I still stuck with it, so it's going to depend on the person also. I wanted to play real bad and practiced all the time.
If you see a guitar online that you like, check out the merchant and see if other people are happy with their purchases and how quickly do they deliver. A lot of times online you can get package deals, where you get the guitar, strings, case, polish, maybe even music.
Getting started on a used guitar can be one of the most exciting hobbies you can pick up. It's great fun playing a popular song for yourself or parties!
Here's a cool video where the teacher explains the Drop D tuning to play with a popular song. A lot of beginners are confused by Drop D tuning but it is really very simple as you can see. And he also stresses buying a tuner.
Here's a young lady playing and singing with her Taylor. Now we are in the expensive end of guitars. They sound nice, her camera mic is not that good but you can hear how it fills the room and her voice is good also.
Even know acoustic guitar history is very ancient it's still one of the best instruments for expressing yourself through music. The good thing is there is an acoustic guitar for just about any style of music.
And where we have it made is there is so much information on the web about guitar playing. Not only can you buy a nice acoustic and have it delivered to your door, there is a ton or more of instructional sites on the web. For almost any type of song style you are interested in playing.
Some even have live guitar teaching online. So if you want to get an acoustic guitar and start playing now is the best time to jump in.
